Woman sentenced for putting cat in washing machine

A woman who put her cat into a running washing machine and then uploaded a video recording of it on social media was on Monday sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

Wong Yee-ting, a 29-year-old insurance manager, was convicted of animal cruelty at Tuen Mun Court.

She was also ordered to pay the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals HK$27,000 to cover their costs for looking after her pet.

In sentencing, deputy magistrate Fung Lim-wai said the defendant had treated the incident as a joke and ignored the plight of the cat.

However, he noted the animal was not seriously injured.

Fung said he believed the defendant had learned a lesson and it’s unlikely she would commit the crime again.

The case grabbed media attention as Wong is a sister of former Miss Hong Kong, Carmaney Wong.
