Woman dies of Staunton Street crash injuries

Police on Saturday said one of the women injured in Friday evening’s crash, at the junction of Peel Street and Staunton Street in Central, has died. She is a 27-year-old French national.

The accident happened when a car, that had been parked on Peel Street, rolled backwards at speed down a hill after the driver and her passenger had just got out.

The car slammed into a lamp-post on Staunton Street, injuring four males and four females in the process, including the deceased.

Two remain in hospital. One is in critical condition and the other stable.

Police have now upgraded the charge against the 44-year-old driver to dangerous driving causing death. She will appear at Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
