Twenty-four injured in Sha Tin school bus accident

Twenty-four people were injured on Friday after a school bus crashed through a set of traffic lights, colliding with a private car and a van, before veering off the road into a cycling track.

Dashcam footage circulated online showed the bus hurtling through the intersection of Tai Chung Kiu Road and Fo Tan Road at around 1pm. It appears to crash over a raised median through the traffic lights, before clipping vehicles that were travelling in the same direction.

The school bus had been carrying 55 primary school pupils.

The police said all the pupils had fastened their seat belts and it was fortunate that only some pupils had suffered minor injuries, such as scratches to their limbs.

One girl told RTHK she heard a huge bang when the accident happened. She said she bumped her head and was very scared.

The police’s preliminary investigation found that the bus driver hadn’t followed road markings while crossing the intersection. They suspect he was in a lane where he was only allowed to turn right, but instead drove straight on.

The driver suffered a bone fracture and is in a serious condition. Officers said he will be arrested for dangerous driving.
