Top officials call for constitutional education

Government officials marked Constitution Day on Saturday by stressing the need for strengthened education about the Constitution and the Basic Law.

Writing on his blog, Chief Secretary John Lee said anti-China disruptors had been spreading false and misleading ideas about ‘one country, two systems’ in recent years, and the SAR government had to put things back on the right track.

He said the government would enhance training about the Constitution and Basic Law, particularly for civil servants, teachers and students.

The importance of education and promotion of the Constitution was also highlighted by Police Commissioner Raymond Siu, who cited President Xi Jinping as he made a speech in a flag-raising ceremony at the Police College.

He said having patriots rule Hong Kong had become the main theme of the SAR, and the city had to establish the authority of the Constitution by raising public awareness.

Siu said law enforcement must agree that allegiance to the Constitution underpinned national security, and they had to live up to the sacred responsibility of upholding national security.

Speaking at the same event, the Director of Broadcasting, Patrick Li, said RTHK had the duty to promote Constitution Day, and provide programmes that let the public understand the nation and develop their national identity.
