T8 in effect as storm edges closer to HK

The Hong Kong Observatory on Tuesday afternoon issued the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm signal as severe tropical storm Kompasu nears Hong Kong.

At 5pm, Kompasu was about 470 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong, and was forecast to move west at about 25 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea towards the vicinity of Hainan island.

The observatory says the outer rainbands of the storm will bring showers and squalls to Hong Kong on Tuesday evening.

The observatory also warned of flooding in low-lying areas, and people are urged to take precautions.
