Soco calls for solitary confinement review

A prisoners’ rights advocate is calling on prison authorities to improve arrangements for prisoners in solitary confinement.

Richard Tsoi, from the Society for Community Organisation (Soco), said such prisoners usually face greater stress and they should be allowed to write to psychologists for support.

He also wants authorities here to cut the maximum time a person can be kept in solitary.

‘We also suggest that authorities can review suggestions given by the United Nations Committee against Torture on the 15-day duration as a better policy arrangement instead of the existing 28 days,” he said.
