Shanghai’s Covid cases drop as Beijing’s creep up

Authorities in Shanghai on Tuesday reported a further drop in the number of Covid infections, from a total of more than 7,000 the day before to fewer than 6,000.

There were 274 symptomatic infections, down from 727. The number of asymptomatic cases stood at 5,395, versus 6,606 a day earlier.

Twenty Covid patients have died, down from 32 deaths a day earlier. Health officials said the patients were all chronically ill.

Meanwhile, the number of cases in Beijing is creeping up, with 51 symptomatic infections and 11 asymptomatic cases.

The capital will carry out three rounds of Covid tests in a bid to curb the virus.

Citizens have been asked to cooperate with the authorities and maintain social distancing to prevent virus transmission.
