Police received a call about the collision at the intersection of Tai Chung Kiu Road and Sha Tin Wai Road next to the Shing Mun River shortly before 3pm.
The route 803M green minibus was left on its side after the crash. Big pools of blood could be seen underneath the vehicle and near it.
Police said the driver was thrown out of his seat and trapped, and was later certified dead at the scene.
Officers said they will investigate the driving behaviour of all those involved, whether anyone had driven through red traffic lights, and if people had been wearing their seatbelts properly.
A witness said a number of people nearby helped with the rescue, but were unable to free the driver.
He said when firemen arrived a few minutes later to smash the windscreen and set the driver free, he didn’t appear to be moving.
Firemen said they managed to rescue one passenger who was also trapped in the wreckage.
Two of the injured people were said to be in serious condition, and others suffered back, neck and arm injuries.
The woman driving the private car complained of chest pains and was also taken to hospital.
They were taken to the nearby Prince of Wales Hospital and the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po for treatment.
The driver of the car has been arrested.
