Oil tanker explodes in waters 300km from Hong Kong

An oil tanker on Saturday exploded 300km east of Hong Kong, killing one person and injuring six others.

The Government Flying Service has transported the injured from the scene, with some of them sent to Eastern Hospital.

The service said the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre reported the explosion at around 4pm, initially saying that seven people had been injured – four of them in serious condition.

Once they arrived, rescuers confirmed that one of the crew members had died, and that a fire on the tanker had been put out.

Two helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft were dispatched in the operation.
