Observatory to consider typhoon signal tomorrow

The Observatory on Sunday said it may issue a tropical cyclone warning signal during the day on Monday as Severe Typhoon Rai moves gradually towards Hong Kong.

At 2pm, the storm was within 200 kilometres of the coast of southern Vietnam, from where it’s expected to turn north and then northeast towards Hainan Island and the coast of Guangdong.

However, forecasters say on its current track Rai is not expected to come within 800 kilometres of Hong Kong as it’s predicted to turn in a more easterly direction as it move into the northern part of the South China Sea.

“Depending on the intensity and track of Rai, the Observatory will consider the necessity of issuing a tropical cyclone warning signal during the day tomorrow,” it said.

Forecasters also expect Rai to weaken, though it will still bring rain in the next couple of days.

The then Super Typhoon left at least 99 people dead as it swept through the central Philippines on Thursday and Friday.
