New vaccination centre to open for students

Civil service chief Patrick Nip said a new vaccination facility dedicated to students will open this week at Leighton Centre in Causeway Bay, in a bid to boost the vaccine takeup among young people.

From Wednesday, the new facility – located on the sixth floor of the building – will offer outreach vaccination services for pupils.

Nip, who’s in charge of the city’s inoculation programme, also revealed that three vaccination facilities initially designated for the elderly and children will open for all residents at the end of this week.

They are located at the Central Library in Causeway Bay, the Hong Kong Spinners Industrial Building in Cheung Sha Wan, and Millennium City 5 in Kwun Tong.

Nip said less people have been getting jabbed recently, and there’s a need to further bolster the overall vaccination rate.

“I suspect that some who made a vaccination booking became infected and couldn’t get vaccinated in the meantime. There might also be others who have recovered, and it’s not time to get a shot yet. Those are the possibilities,” he said.

“But the main problem remains that, while 90 percent of people have received one shot, and 80 percent two, we still have to focus on inoculating the elderly.”
