New culture bureau should tell China’s story: DAB

The DAB on Monday called for a new government bureau to be established to deal with culture, days after Chief Executive Carrie Lam hinted that such a move is already in the works.

The party said a culture, sports and tourism bureau should take in RTHK, the Information Services Department and the Tourism Commission, and part of their role would be to “tell China stories better”.

“How to tell China stories better, tell One Country, Two Systems stories and greatly develop cultural and creative industries, and even the sports industry? We think the existing structure is unable to cooperate,” DAB chairwoman Starry Lee said at a press conference.

The party said a new housing and land bureau should speed up the construction of homes, while the existing Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau should make mainland issues its top priority.

The DAB also said the SAR government should set up liaison offices in all the other cities of the Greater Bay Area, and recruit staff from outside the administration.

“Currently, the government has to see if civil servants are willing to be stationed [out of Hong Kong and] overseas. We just want to expand the talent pool, so that the SAR government can consider making appointments whenever there are suitable talents,” said the party’s vice chairman, Horace Cheung.
