New Covid cases drop to 3,138

Authorities on Monday reported another 90 deaths amid the Omicron outbreak, bringing the cumulative death tolls past 8,000 even as the coronavirus situation shows signs of easing.

Among the new fatalities, 77 died a public hospitals over the past day.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said 8,049 people with Covid have died amid the latest wave of infections, which translates into a fatality rate of 0.69 percent.

The CHP reported 3,138 new Covid cases for the day – 571 fewer than the previous day.

Among the new cases, about half were confirmed by laboratories, while the rest were self-test results.

Albert Au of the CHP said recent lockdowns of housing blocks found that just two to three percent of residents were infected.

That’s a significant drop from over 10 percent three weeks ago, he said.

He appealed to citizens to heed the government’s call and do self-tests for Covid for three consecutive days starting from Friday.

Au said it could help the authorities identify silent cases and stop virus transmission in the community.
