Maternal death ruled misadventure

A jury looking into the death of a woman suffering childbirth complications five years ago has decided that she died of misadventure.

The coroner’s court heard that after doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital found her baby’s heartbeat to be abnormal, Liang Jinxiao, 33, who was 38 weeks’ pregnant, was arranged to give birth through induced labour in November 2016.

She suffered massive bleeding and died, while the baby survived.

The jury of three men and two women recommended, among other things, that the Hospital Authority formulate guidelines on the use of agents used to induce labour.

The jury also said during induced labour, medical officers should constantly monitor the patient’s blood oxygen level.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital said it will study the recommendations in detail.
