League of Social Democrats says its work continues

Members of the League of Social Democrats have vowed to continue to campaign for social justice, on the eve of a meeting by the Civil Human Rights Front that would reportedly decide on disbanding the group.

The league, one of the front’s member groups, on Thursday held a small protest with the Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China outside the central government’s liaison office in Western, calling for the release of jailed dissidents in the mainland.

A vice-chairman of the League of Social Democrats, Dickson Chau, declined to comment on the fate of the front, while taking note of the recent dissolution of pro-democracy groups and unions, including the Professional Teachers’ Union.

“Those parties and individuals are just fighting for their own rights and citizens’ rights,” said Chau.

“I don’t think there’s any reason for us to disband or lie low, so we will keep on speaking up.”

He added that making political speeches and speaking out against social injustice should not be an offence.
