Hong Kong reports 9th imported Omicron case

Health authorities said on Wednesday that a woman who recently arrived from the United States has been confirmed to have the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The patient, 21, is the ninth imported Omicron case in Hong Kong.

The centre said the woman was among five imported Covid cases announced on Tuesday.

She had earlier received two BioNTech jabs and landed in the SAR on Sunday.

Officials said she was picked up at the airport, reassuring the public that the highly contagious variant had not spread to the community.

“There are so far nine cases involving Omicron in Hong Kong… and all were detected at the Hong Kong International Airport restricted area, at a designated quarantine facility or at a designated quarantine hotel. There has not been any spread in the community,” the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said in a statement.

“The CHP will adopt the most stringent prevention and control measures to prevent the mutant strain from entering the local community.”

Meanwhile, authorities recorded one new imported Covid infection, involving a man who flew in from Germany on Monday.
