Hong Kong records 13,074 new Covid cases

Hong Kong on Thursday reported 13,074 new coronavirus infections.

Among them, 5,732 were confirmed by PCR tests in laboratories, while 7,342 people reported their positive rapid test results via an online platform.

Albert Au of the Centre for Health Protection said the number of daily infections had stayed at a high level of between 12,000 and 14,000 in recent days, without any significant further drop.

He said it showed the coronavirus is still being transmitted in the community and people should not let their guard down.

Officials said 152 Covid patients had died over the past day, including a 24-year-old man who had terminal cancer and a 45-year-old foreign domestic helper. They were both double-jabbed.

Also reported were 49 deaths that occurred earlier.

More than 1.08 million people have been confirmed with Covid and a total of 6,557 people have died in the latest wave of infections.

Au admitted a fatality rate of 0.6 per cent is higher than that recorded in other places.

He said one of the reasons for that was a low vaccine take-up among elderly people in Hong Kong, but added that officials needed more time to study the causes of the deaths in all the cases.
