HKU dean of medicine Gabriel Leung resigns

The University of Hong Kong’s dean of medicine, Gabriel Leung, has resigned.

He will join the Hong Kong Jockey Club as its executive director for charities and community, in July 2022.

In an email to HKU staff and students, the university’s president, Zhang Xiang, said Leung will be stepping down at the end of the academic year.

“On behalf of the senior management team, I would like to thank Professor Leung sincerely for his leadership in the faculty, his commitment to his colleagues and students, and his excellent contributions to the HKU community over the past 22 years,” Zhang wrote.

“His exemplary stewardship was especially evident since the outbreak of Covid-19, as he led the faculty’s stellar initiatives in public policy and research to fight the challenges brought by the worldwide pandemic.”

Zhang said the university will initiate a global search for the next dean of medicine, and will ensure that there is a smooth transition.

Leung is one of the government’s advisers on Hong Kong’s coronavirus strategy.
