HK athletes make progress on day one of Olympics

Hong Kong athletes are making progress in their fight for gold on the first day of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

In fencing, former world number one Vivian Kong was the first Hong Kong fencer to reach an Olympics fencing quarter-final, but lost to Russian Aizanat Murtazaeva.

The 27-year-old had earlier beat Poland’s Renata Knapik-Miazga and Peru’s Maria Luisa Doig.

Teammates Kaylin Hsieh and Coco Lin were both eliminated in round one at the Makuhari Messe Hall.

Rower Winnie Hung, who is making her Olympic debut, took advantage of her repechage and edged into the quarter-final in the women’s single sculls event on Sunday.

The Hong Kong team had a strong showing in table tennis. Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem entered the quarter-final of the mixed doubles event after defeating Hungary’s athletes, and will face France on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong shuttler Angus Ng made light work of Mexico’s Lino Muñoz in the badminton men’s singles competition, winning in straight sets of 21-9 and 21-10 in about half an hour.

In the badminton mixed doubles Group D, HongKong’s Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet beat Malaysia’s Chan Peng-soon and Goh Liu-ying 2-1.

The Hong Kong pair will go on to face China’s Wang Yi-lu and Huang Dong-ping on Sunday.

But in the women’s 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay heats, swimmers Stephanie Au, Camille Cheng, Karen Tam and Ho Nam-wai found the competition too tough on Saturday evening.
