Felix Chung says Legco still has range of voices

Liberal Party leader, Felix Chung, on Monday played down the impact of the loss of opposition legislators from Legco, saying the Legislative Council would still have room for different viewpoints.

He said the current Legco term – which ends on Wednesday – had had problems because of filibustering from opposition members, who eventually resigned en masse or were disqualified.

“Legco’s been held up by the opposition groups and we saw a lot of ridiculous activities happen in the first three years,” Chung told RTHK.

Chung says he hoped the seventh Legco term next year would be “more steady”, and rejected suggestions that the loss of opposition lawmakers might not be healthy.

All societies had opposition, “but not in the way that we have in Hong Kong,” Chung said.

He said he welcomed opposition views and ideas, “but not in a disruptive way”.

“We still have different views and different voices from different pro-establishment parties,” he said.

Chung also said he hoped the party could retain its four functional constituency seats in the legislature at the upcoming December elections.
