‘Don’t increase statutory holidays during depression’

The Liberal Party on Thursday said the government should delay moves to increase statutory holidays for blue-collar workers for at least a couple of years, until the local economy has improved.

Liberal Party leader Felix Chung also said the government should delay abolishing the MPF off-setting mechanism, which allows employers to use part of a worker’s pension fund to cover workers’ severance and long service payments.

“We do not mind to give more benefits to employees as long as the economy is good, everybody knows that we’re making profits” Chung said.

“Now Hong Kong is, actually the whole world is having depression, so how can we afford to pay more?” he asked.

He said Hong Kong had faced tough economic times for the past few years and it was not the right time to increase the burden on employers.

Chung added that the party would propose amendments to bills currently being discussed by lawmakers.
