Customs seize record 700kg of meth

Customs officers on Sunday said they had seized a record 700 kilos of the drug methamphetamine in an operation with their mainland counterparts.

Two men, aged 43 and 44, were arrested in connection with the case.

The HK$400 million haul was made at the airport and a warehouse last month, and officers said they were looking for the mastermind.

Officers said they found 447 kilos of “ice” in liquid form concealed inside three huge transformers in a shipment from Mexico on March 18 at the airport.

An additional of 253 kilos were found hidden in 10 pieces of industrial-use anti-vibratory rubber in a warehouse in Sheung Shui on March 24 after further investigations and an exchange of intelligence with mainland authorities.

Officers said an overseas drug syndicate had used messaging apps to contact logistics firms on the mainland to handle the shipment after it arrived in Hong Kong.

“In that way the drug dealers did not have to show up at all… it’s very cunning,” said Lee Kam-wing, the head of Customs Drug Investigation Bureau.

Officers said they don’t believe the case involved local drug syndicates, and they believe the drugs were intended for other markets. (Additional reporting by AFP)
