Covid cases in HK dip below 1,500

New Covid infections in Hong Kong have dropped below 1,500, with cases from both PCR and rapid tests falling into triple figures.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) on Monday reported 1,407 locally transmitted cases, down from 1,921 the day before.

Of the latest cases, 698 were confirmed via PCR tests and 709 were reported by people taking rapid antigen tests, while there were 13 imported cases.

Health authorities said a total of 2,875 infections were found with self-tests taken and reported by people during a voluntary testing exercise from Friday to Sunday.

Reviewing the results of the three-day campaign, Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the CHP said about 65 percent of the positive cases were asymptomatic while 35 percent showed symptoms, reversing a previous trend in which more people who tested positive via self-tests were symptomatic.

Chuang also noted that the city’s overall caseload has been falling in the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, health officials reported 57 additional deaths, including 52 in the past day.

The number of fatalities in the Omicron outbreak now stands at 8,614.
