Cold snap to hit Hong Kong over Christmas

Forecasters say Hongkongers should wrap up warm as an intense winter monsoon will reach Hong Kong over the Christmas holidays, with the mercury expected to dip to nine degrees or below on Monday.

The observatory said temperatures will start to drop when winds pick up on Saturday and will fall to around 11 degrees on Boxing Day. It will be a few degrees lower in the New Territories and over high ground.

“Under the influence of the associated cold surge, the weather in Hong Kong is expected to be appreciably cold on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. It will also be windy,” said senior scientific officer Cheung Ping.

“There will be one or two rain patches [on Saturday night] and it will be cloudy with rain on Sunday and on Monday. It will also be windy. Rain and wind will give you a much stronger feeling of cold,” he added.

The observatory said it expects temperatures to rise from the middle of next week.
