Car fire sparks rush hour tunnel closure

A car caught fire inside Tate’s Cairn Tunnel on Tuesday evening, forcing a brief closure of the tunnel.

Police said they were alerted about the incident shortly after 6pm.

An online photo showed flames coming out from the front of a car in the Sha Tin-bound lane of the tunnel.

Meanwhile, videos taken by affected commuters showed dozens of stranded passengers walking out of the tunnel.

Police said the driver reported that her vehicle caught fire while traveling inside Tate’s Cairn.

She escapes unhurt.

The tunnel was reopened about an hour later.
