Bus driver jailed for four years over fatal accident

A bus driver was on Wednesday sentenced to four years in jail over a traffic accident that killed six people in December 2019.

Man Chi-kwong, 57, had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, after the KMB bus he drove crashed into a tree on the side of the Fanling Highway, killing six passengers and leaving eight others seriously injured.

Thirty-one other passengers were also hurt as most of the double-decker’s roof was torn apart.

In handing down the sentence, District Court judge Isaac Tam said the driver had put his passengers’ lives in danger.

On top of the prison sentence, he also ordered the suspension of Man’s driving licence for five years.

The defendant, who had previously been fined for careless driving in a separate incident, was also ordered to take a driving improvement course.
