Airport strives for net zero carbon emissions by 2050

The Airport Authority (AA) on Thursday vowed to achieve net zero carbon emissions at the airport by 2050.

At a press conference, airport officials said 29 major aviation-related companies have committed to its plans, and altogether with the authority, they account for about 90 percent of the current emissions.

Officials set 2035 as its midpoint target and they hope they would be able to slash carbon emissions by 55 percent by then compared with three years ago.

“Our target is net zero instead of neutrality. So it’s quite clear to us we try not to pursue any offsets at all, in particular for the midpoint target 2035,” said Peter Lee, AA’s general manager on sustainability.

“But in term of 2050, the ultimate target, I think we need to wait and see what technologies are upcoming, etc. Net zero, in fact, also implies no offset.”

To reduce carbon emissions, officials said they have been replacing vehicles used at the restricted area, including those providing ground support, with electric cars.

Lights at the airport terminals have also been changed to LED and air-conditioners have been upgraded with higher energy efficiency, they added.
